Are you trying to find a therapist who understands?
Maybe you’re trying to find your way after leaving a restrictive faith community. Or, you’re suffering in your sexuality due to the effects of growing up within purity culture. Maybe you’re trying to figure out what your sexuality even is.
Or maybe you’ve figured all that out and are looking for someone to help you move forward with your life.
When dealing with spiritual or relational harm, religious trauma, sexual shame, and/or being queer, navigating the world can feel complicated. Mental health issues are frustrating, anxiety and depression can feel insurmountable, and dealing with non-accepting family seems impossible. The feelings of having a good life — feelings of satisfaction, confidence, and fulfillment — are hard to find.
Many people have a difficult time finding a place to turn when life goes wrong. Especially when we leave communities we once loved, we often wonder “is there something wrong with me?”
That’s where therapy can help. I’m a queer therapist who works with people of all identities. I understand what it’s like to try to discover who you are separate from who you’ve been told you’re supposed to be. I’ve lived it.
Together, we can help you find your confidence so you can start living the life you want.
About Matthias Roberts, MA, LMHCA, He/Him
I grew up in the churches and cornfields of Iowa. When I was 11, I figured out I was gay and spent the next thirteen years of my life trying to come to terms with my sexuality and what people around me taught. These were years of shame, fear, bargaining with God, and struggle. My own therapist helped me see that I can live a happy, fulfilling life. Now, I help others discover the same.
I did my training at The Seattle School of Theology and Psychology and hold an MA in Theology and Culture and an MA in Counseling Psychology.
Additionally, I have extensive post-graduate training in working with survivors of abuse through trauma-focused narrative therapy. I am a core facilitator at the Allender Center, an organization helping survivors of trauma and abuse heal by stepping courageously into their stories of pain and harm.
My first book Beyond Shame: Creating a Healthy Sex Life on Your Own Terms helps survivors of purity culture work through their sexual shame. My newest book Holy Runaways: Rediscovering Faith after Being Burned By Religion explores recovering from religious trauma and will release in October 2023.
I believe that transformation happens through relationship and the therapy relationship is an extraordinary container for transformation. I practice from an anti-oppression and anti-racist lens and am continually striving to embody those practices in my own life.
I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor Associate in the state of Washington (#MC60884578).

Rates & Insurance

Individual Sessions (50 minutes) – $180
I do not currently offer couples counseling
My practice is private pay.
Fees can be paid by either cash, check, credit, or HSA. Due to limited space available and restrictions of services, I do not bill insurance. However, upon request a receipt of payment and services is available in order for you to submit for Out of Network benefits.
Please note that if you wish to pursue reimbursement, insurance companies require a mental health diagnosis. I will speak with you and provide psychoeducation around this topic. You are responsible for interacting with your insurance providers and for therapy payments.
As with any insurance questions, it is a good idea to call your insurance company directly to verify coverage before receiving services. Some helpful questions to ask include:
What is the reimbursement rate for an out-of-network provider? Will you reimburse for care provided by a therapist with an associate license (eg, LMHCA)?
Is approval required from my primary care physician for me to pursue and be reimbursed for mental health services?
How many outpatient mental health sessions are covered per year?
What is my deductible and has it been met?
